For more information please email us with the subject title 'Live-in Permaculture' *Minimum 12 weeks
Important Update: For long term and short term volunteers.
During our February 2013 'Permaculture Design Course', with the team of 25 students and assisting teachers, we have redesigned our approach to implement working permaculture model at Sapney farm as well as in the village kitchen gardens to have a bigger and more fruitful impact towards our goal of sustainable community living.
Due to the dynamic nature of our project, please be ready for some spontaneous actions.
Above all, from now on you will be having more hands-on experience in compost making, raised beds, nursery, compost toilets, medicinal plants and
an over all design implementation of three permamculture ethics and twelve principles.

Joining our 'Green Gang' is much more than gardening!
Heal The Soil - Work Exchange Volunteering Program - India
We are glad to be able to host hundreds of volunteers since March 2011, when 'Heal The Soil CSA' project started its 'Village Kitchen Garden' outreach programe.
Before you pack your bags and get ready to join us, please take few minutes to understand your role in this project. Make sure to read all of the below so that when you arrive at the farm, we spend less time in talking and more time in action :)
We would like to provide you an experience of a life time living in a permaculture community, sharing tasks and other responsibility during your stay with us is in the very essence of community living. During high season we have 3 long term volunteers and 3 permanent residence at the farm which will guide you and help you in the best possible way so you can learn and share the basics of permaculture and its sustainable principles. We take up only limited numbers of volunteers at any given time so that we can focus on developing the farm and the bigger vision of 'Heal The Soil' Social project, empowering rural communities.
We are having wonderful time working with village communities and making vegetable kitchen gardens around their houses. We do this every Sunday mornings. For rest of the days we have lot of other stuff which we need to work on to develop this project further and in many more villages.
Sapney Farm is where we all live and that's where we conduct workshops and training. Our demonstration vegetable raised beds and nursery are also in this farm, its a upcoming farm and its under development with its natural bamboo huts and other basic infrastructure. We are a vegetarian community and in India vegetarian means 'No Eggs, No Sea Food'. You can still enjoy your choice of food when you eat out.
We do not entertain anything which is socially or legally not expected in this part of the world!

Most important activities for the volunteers on the farm.
Growing our own organic food and promoting the same awareness with as many as people and communities around the world is the core idea of 'Heal The Soil CSA'.
Why? Because we all need to eat 3 times a day, we all can do without many other thing for many days but we can not do without food and water ;) and that's why kitchen is the heart of any family home and its no different in our community.
Cooking good healthy food, Keeping clean and tidy kitchen and eating together with all the family members is where the community experience starts!
'We are what we eat'
Other important tasks to be shared
a. Watering all the veg beds after 4pm and maintaining them.
b. Keeping the kitchen area clean and tidy.
c. Keeping the rooms clean and tidy.
d. Keeping the water tank filled up twice a day, just need to press a button.
c. Using common kitchen to cook your food together, we also have solar cooker and fire wood pizza oven.
e. Keeping the place secure and lock the gates at night.
f. We do have guests time to time who pay to stay at the farm for few days, we need to make them feel home.

f. And any of odd job Bob tasks :)
In short, please be flexible to take up a task as per the priority of work needed during your stay with us.

HTS possibly the only project in this area which offers work exchange and we can only host 2 long term volunteers (3 months) under work exchange program where we provide food and accommodation in exchange of their help to develop the project further. Sapney farm is still far from self sufficient when it comes to growing our own food and financially supporting the the entire project. To be able to support local farms and to produce more food at our farm, we have made it mandatory for all the short term volunteers (minimum 2 weeks), a contribution of 200 Rs (4 USD) per day per person towards food expenses.
We expect all the volunteers to understand that 'Heal the soil' project is a social and environmental project to improve our lives, our climate, our living conditions and literally heal the soil. While working with HTS, please be conscious that you will be participating and working for our plant's wellbeing and not for any individual or any organization, during your stay, YOU will be the one who will GAIN the most from making multi layered raised beds, learning about local herbs and medicinal plants, art of watering plants, community cooking and sharing recipes, tips and tricks on composting, general maintenance, design and development, idea sharing, play-with-clay pottery, firewood make-your-own-pizza and many more fun activities!
When you join us, you will be provided with more detailed guidelines about the project and everyday task sharing, please make sure to go through it as well, so we all are tuned and understand our importance in the community :)
We do not entertain volunteers who are mostly looking for free accommodation in this popular tourist destination. If you are not sure about committing for 2 weeks minimum, you are always welcome to visit us in the mornings and check out the farm and the project in person.
HTS is not an NGO and do not receive fund from anywhere else, its a green initiative by three families living in the surrounding villages and their only income comes from its sister project KofiBar and by conducting Permaculture workshops time to time.
We are new, we are small, we are learning and we are not perfect with how we develop our project, its an experiment for social and environmental good. So please come with a open mind and a heart to 'heal the soil' to 'heal our selves'.
We are a small group of people working on this project, we would love to reply to all of your queries in best possible way, but please understand that it takes a lot of our time to answer all the emails and request we receive everyday, so unless you are positive about joining us please keep your questions at the minimal and try to find information which you can find online about India and about your other traveling plans, just google it!
Above all, we all need to use our instincts and common sense to deal with day to day happenings, but at the same time keep our goals and our dreams for a greener healthier world with equal opportunities for all beings.
I can guarantee that this will be an experience of a lifetime working with soil, learning from Ilumalai, other permaculturists and volunteers and friends from around the world.
Looking forward to have you with us!
Love and Peace
